Search and Rescue
Far too serious to be considered a dog sport, but because of the extensive training aspect of the endeavor SAR suitably belongs here. From serious obedience training to agility to tracking, the SAR dog is a master of many talents, an independent thinker and a team player. No compromise can be accepted as the SAR dog must be of impeccable temperament and stability even before training commences. After all, this is not a sport of fun, it is about saving lives.

Pet Therapy
From assisted living facilities, eldercare facilities and pediatric wards in hospitals, dogs (and cats) have been able to add many positive elements with regular visits. Assessing a dog for this work is critical as is their training, and ongoing support. Ask questions and find out more about pet therapy programs in your area.

Assistance Dogs
Again, like SAR this is an endeavor that has important implications making it something other than a sport. That doesn't mean its not a labor of love to rear, assess and train a dog to assist those with vision, hearing or limited mobility. The skills of these dogs go beyond helping just those with vision challenges. Find out about all aspects of Assistance Dogs from being a puppy raiser, to adopting a dog that was deemed unsuitable to how they help in a variety of areas.

The Senior Dog
We may get angry and defensive and frustrated over the idea of our wonderful canine companion aging, just as we might fight the sense that we age ourselves, but providing additional attention to the changing needs of the Senior Dog (for the Giant breeds this can be as early as 5 but for most its around 7) often adds quality and quantity to their lives.

Dog Food Recall
The recent concerns and implications of melamine and associated chemicals in commercial dog food is tragic due to the pain and suffering imposed on our beloved companions as well as because of the consequences it holds for all of us concerned over the future of both the human and animal food industry. Here we can post about care of afflicted animals, changes we've made in how we feed and how we came to make those choices and even how we might go about improving the quality and safety of the diet of our dogs and ourselves.

GoodBye to Our Friends
Whether by design or luck, most of us will outlive our canine companions. While this means we can help make their last years as happy and pleasant as any other, it does also mean that we are usually left with some sadness at their parting. Whether young or old, our dogs fill our life with joy (thus the pain at their passing) and being reminded of that joy is often the best treatment for that ensuing grief. Sharing our memories and experiences here is a step on that path and the help us remember we aren't alone.
