Many of the dogs in the Working Group have ultimately found their purpose through many specializations in their history, from War Dogs, to Herding to Guardians and Draft.  Many breeds have been used for all these tasks.  Generally large, powerful and intelligent, that is the basis of their selection for tasks as demanding as protection and Schutzhund.  In ancient times, no doubt, some of them were produced to be fierce or even dangerous, now, while the capability is still there and must be considered with respect, they are bred and handled to be balanced, wise companions capable of defense but with little need to call upon it.
