Like other breeds whose impact is still felt in the other breeds they participated in the development of (such as the German Pudel), the Belgian Shorthaired Pointer is considered to no longer be a viable breed (due to lack of registrations over more than a lifetime). While it would be simple to be saddened by the idea of the loss of their presence, it is important to recognize several points. First that the species continues to exist, the breed, which is simply a designation made by man may end, but this is essentially true of every mixed breed that lives and dies without anyone notating its unique characteristics as a breed. Second, for many such breeds with such a result, the breed lacks characteristics that help in its identification and as such, it is very difficult if not impossible to establish the breed. If this is the case with the Belgian Shorthaired Pointer is possible but not a certainty as currently there doesn't seem to be information, photographs or other information readily available for such an assessment to be made.
